Thanks for the heads up on the insider trades.

I think my ISP will be upgrading its modems to 56Kflex this month
but I'm in no hurry to upgrade my modem. Most of us will never
see the full benefit of the 56K modem just like *almost nobody*
is able to connect at 33.6K! For example, I've heard that in
order to get the full benefit of 56K X2, the phone lines have
to be upgraded at both ends (don't know if this is true
of 56Kflex). Don't hold your breath waiting for the phone
company to give you better lines.

I'm sure that the technology for the two standards will be
faster than the current "33.6" modems but it clearly won't
give you the full advertised "56" speed. This is just the
hype value and I like the fact that BOCI didn't participate
in the hype. The pressing question is really "which standard
will win out?"

When US Robotics first came out with it's 9600 baud modem it also
had its proprietary standard, and at that time it was just
USRX against everyone else, though I have to admit that there
weren't as many options as there are now. Now, here were are,
10+ years later, and we again see USRX with it's own standard.
They seem to have gained an early following for X2, but I believe
that only time will tell which standard will win. As more
people switch, it is likely that one standard will start to
dominate. At this time, it appears that the ISP's will
be catering to both standards.
