<I certainly don't think that government should get involved in the funding of the arts either.>

Why not, may I ask?

In an age where so much emphasis is on science and technology, because they are career-oriented subjects, the importance of Art, Music, Philosophy, History(those educated in the Arts knew it wasn't a "New Era") and the humanities is neglected. This can also be seen in the fact that the teaching profession is not nearly as valued as it used to be, especially by the government.

Children need to know about Life and the methods of inquiry into its mysteries (or into its commonplaces). They also need to know about music and art and to develop the analytical skills necessary to describe and interpret these phenomena in their various forms.

Life is a lot more than a day trade. Life is an Art.
