That reminds me of when I was back in undergraduate school, I once spent a semester as a black student...
Each semester on my enrollment form I had to indicate my race by choosing one of the standard options. Prior thereto, I had always indicated that I was "White/Caucasian." Without giving the matter a whole lot of thought, I decided to indicate this time that I was black. I did so and forgot about the whole thing. Until the next semester, when suddenly each day my mailbox was filled with letters from black faculty members welcoming me to the university, scholarship offers, applications for financial aid, admissions applications for graduate schools, notices of meetings of black campus organizations, etc. The only thing I took them up on was attending a "Black Student Graduate School Fair," in which about a hundred representatives from universities came recruiting. Although I was the only white guy there, nobody ever questioned my presence, or my race. Anyway, I changed my race indication back to white on the next enrollment form, and the mail stopped.
