What makes you think the media recount will show that Bush won? Or are you only going to accept Larry Klayman's numbers??
The demographics of the undervote and overvote in Florida (i.e., the localities where the greatest concentration of undervotes and overvotes was to be found) suggest pretty strongly that Gore will "win" the "media recount" by a wide margin -- even in GOP areas, the undervote tended to be concentrated in precincts that were democratic-leaning (and in minority precincts where the vote was 90% for Gore). Since the tally of undervotes and overvotes tends to follow the breakdown of tabulated votes on a precinct by precinct basis, any recounting clearly favors Gore -- and that, incidentally, is why Bush wanted to stop it so badly, not because he thought it was legally wrong, but because the only way he could assure "victory" was to stop the counting process from continuing.
Be that as it may, if Bush were to win a legitimate "media recount" (i.e., an independent auditing firm hired by the Herald, not Larry Klayman), I personally would back off far edges of my bitterness because it would at least support the legitimacy of his claim of victory (legitimacy that it completely lacks at the moment). Gore's winning the popular vote would still put the damper on any claim of a mandate, but at least Bush and his supporters could fairly say that they won, which they simply can't do now.
I would still feel some bitterness toward Bush for pursuing in November what I consider to be an immoral strategy -- to stop the vote counting at all costs, since he could only lose if it continued -- and I will still think that it would have been a lot better if he had established the true victory before his appointment by the Supreme Court, not after it. And no matter what, I will always believe that the Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore is an abomination that pretty much defines "intellectual dishonesty", and defies every "principle" of judicial restraint that the conservatives on that Court have ever laid claim to.
But I would cease questioning the legitimacy of his electoral victory. And by the way, your perceived need for clsure is about 180 degrees from where I come out. If the GOP were on the receving end of this, there would be no closure, EVER, any more than you guys will allow there to be "closure" on the aftermath of an Arkansas land deal that went belly up over 10 years ago. As they say, what goes around comes around -- you make your bed, you better be prepared to lay in it. |
