I should mention that mutilation and death from the blasts themselves are not the only way that landmines cause suffering. In very poor countries where every inch of land is needed for feeding the hungry, there are vast stretches of arable land untillable because it has been studded with these devices.

I wonder if those who think they are acceptable weapons for us to use in military actions would be willing to pay higher taxes for making all the mined land safe again after the actions are over for us but not for the farmers who plant on, or the children who play on, that land.
