I can't see Drive Image not writing to that drive. I would try it, but if you restore the image, better do a back up in case something goes haywire.

I store my backup images on a separate hard drive, devoted to holding back up data only.

The way I have my system set up with Drive Image and 2 hard drives, is rock solid secure in the case of hard drive failure.
