as I see most libertarians' views as a hodgepodge of both sides of the political coin.

Libertarianism is not a hodgepodge of both sides of the political coin. It is actually based on a philosophy of non coercion. It assumes that we the people give certain powers to the government, not that the government gives us rights.

How does that translate into specific issues??? Glad you asked...
-I believe that I have the right and obligation to ensure and protect the safety of myself and my loved ones. This means that I believe that I have the right to own a gun. And here in L.A. during the riots, it would be hard to argue that the police are here to protect us, so we don't need guns, when they were running away from the conflicts and leaving innocent people to suffer the attacks by criminals.

-I believe that neither I, nor the government have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body (nor they mine).

-I believe that I have a right to home school or send my kids to private schools and not incur the double cost of having to pay for both private and public schools.

-I don't believe that the government has the right to support your freedom of expression.

-A private organization does have the right to restrict freedom of expression in their domain. In other words, SI can restrict certain forms of expression on there site and I have the right to restrict certain forms of expression in my home.

The reason that it may seem like a hodgepodge of both sides is that both sides have areas that coincide with the libertarian ideals. But both parties also have characteristics that go very much against the libertarian ideals.
