Good luck with the drug coated stents, the experimental results are not striking. Radiation is the best treatment in many years, and in animals perfectly prevents restenosis. The problem is the very high expense. If radiation dies it will be for cost. However, if I (or anyone I love) ever need an angioplasty, I will insist on radiation. Novoste as a company must get medicare to make an acceptable reimbursement. The current is $2400 and the cost per procedure is $3300. So the hospital's loss is $900 per case not including the lost MD time, the lost Cath lab time, and so forth. Thus, medically, radiation wins, economically chemotherapy coated stents may be better than non-chemotherapy coated stents.
