In your "storage hierarchy," why so many storage devices when the
following would be adequate in most cases (using your example):

Primary Storage Device: Winchester hard disk - 3GB+
Near-Line Storage Device: Zip
Backup/Archival Storage Device: CD-RW (PNCL's new RCDW226).

The above eliminates the need for a Jazz and tape drive. And in cases
where the user would want to go with only one storage device (in addition
to the hard drive), he could easily be persuaded to go with the CD-RW.
Since, it provides greater capacity and CD-ROM compatibility. Thus, PNCL's
rewritable CD drive could pose competition even to the popular Zip.

I agree with your CD-R Advantages/Disadvantages list. I would only add
that on the "Limited life expectancy due to DVD," the PNCL drive would
have greater life expectancy since it is (should be) upward compatible to
DVD-ROM as noted in the press release.

Bottom line: If PNCL's product delivers, IOM may face meaningful if not
serious competition in the months ahead. Am I missing something here?

Luis
