When I was a teen in Cincinnati, we lived a couple of blocks from the bus stop. Walking home from work every afternoon, my Mom made friends with a neighbor boy's cat and half-grown kitten. One day the boy announced that he was moving to a place that did not allow pets and he wanted my Mom to take them. Well, she was delighted. Shortly though, we found the "Ma" cat to be preggers. When she had the kittens (4) we could not keep them all in our 4-room apartment. My aunt and grandfather, who lived 35 miles away in the country, had practically a zoo of 14 cats and 7 dogs and even a couple of birds. She agreed to take in the Ma cat and her now weaned kittens. We kept the older kitten. One weekend we put Ma cat and her kittens in a proper pet carrier, on the backseat floor of the car, covered it with a blanket and drove to aunties place. New home seemed to be accepted by all, new and old, except Ma cat was somewhat dismayed. Anyway, three days later, a very bedraggled Ma cat was scratching and meowing at our back door. She had managed to find her way across 28 miles of country and seven+ miles of city, never having seen anything on the trip out except the inside of a pet carrier covered by a blanket on the floor of a car. The poor thing looked liked she had fought her way through a couple of dog pounds. Needless to say, Ma cat stayed with us from then on. Sort of a feline Lassie story.
