US Trade Commission to Investigate Patent Complaint From Rohm

Tokyo, Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission said it will investigate a complaint from Rohm Co., a Japanese maker of integrated circuits and semiconductor devices, that an unlisted Japanese company sold products in the U.S. infringing on its patents.

Rohm last month filed suits with the ITC and a Pennsylvania district court alleging Nichia Corp. is violating Rohm's patents on blue light-emitting diodes. Blue LEDs are used in mobile phones, flashlights and laser printers.

The ITC within 45 days will set a target date to complete the investigation, the trade commission said in a written release.

Rohm is teaming with Cree Inc. of the U.S. to develop blue LEDs. The two aim to begin sales of blue LEDs next summer. Rohm, which estimates that the global market for the devices is worth 40 billion yen ($355 million) to 50 billion yen annually, will license its proprietary LED technology to North Carolina-based Cree.

Rohm shares fell 130 yen, or 0.6 percent, to 21,770 yen.
