The problem with analysts from the big investment houses is their blatant conflicts of interest. They are so concerned about losing possible investment banking business that many of them are nothing more than management sycophants. How can one put any credence in an analyst community that says far less than 1% of listed stocks are outright sells? Wouldn't 50% be a more reasonable number? These ridiculous downgrades from strong buy to buy...what is that all about? Since it is impossible to tell who is honest (and also competent) and who is a paid shill, why bother? This column from Jim Grant in the current Forbes is a nice summary of a sad state of affairs.
