I would argue that the private sector does an EXCELLENT job of supporting the arts. It supports cinema and television; successful actors do quite well. It supports literature; successful novelist are multimillionaires.

And it hardly be said that it supports only garbage; there are many movies and novels that are now considered classics that were also commercial successes when they were issued.

The problem is that it does not support the art and artists that certain people want it to. However,in an economically and politically free society, they have the option of doing so themselves.
