Lee...go to the County Courthouse. All information should be available to the public on fiche or computer. then..1st go to Treasurers office with the address of the property, ask them for the Tax ID #, this will identify the property in their computer and will list taxes due and the owners name.
2nd....with ID# and owners name go to the Clerk and Recorders office there. from this you can look up "Grantor/Grantee" for cross reference. check out the micro fiche/computer and look up the owner...(John Doe as both Grantor and Grantee). if fiche..Grantors fiche will be in one 'box' and Grantee in another. these will list all legal transactions regarding the person and property..ie. mortgages, bill of sale, mechanics liens, etc.
DO NOT be afraid to ask for help...that is what these people are paid to do and most are usually quite helpful.
