I've found I'm not too good at short-selling and so like to have stocks which can move against the index. Recently, Berkshire Hathaway, Safeway, Unisys (bought around the low +/-), Washington Post, Jones Apparallel have been good picks (some are ones I got my father to buy, some we both bought etc.). I won't talk about the bad ones <g> Now is the time to adjust a bit and get in line with the trend. If Dell say really does have a beta of 2.65 then it's cheaper to get it than pay a lot of margin interest. Of course I bought it on margin anyway <g>. Unisys continued to do well yesterrday too. Also, I've found that in Australia one or two fund managers consistently outperform the index substantially. My favorite is Colonial First State - they have an excellent track record since their foundation in 1989. They offer a product called Geared Share Fund that is a margin loan/actively managed share fund. It has returned around 25% in the last year. Their Future Leaders Fund (Aussie Small Cap) has returned a similar amount.

Now if I could just learn to avoid the two dumbest things I did last year (one involving a junk tech stock at the top of the market and one a plummeting insurance company) I would be doing really well. My track record over the last year on options was about breakeven....I've made far more this month so far than in all of last year. Of course I'm paying a lot more attention than I could during a lot of last year when I was travelling or working a lot harder than at the moment (summer vacation down here in Australain Unis. I'm working on research but taking it pretty easy at times).
