I'm not entirely comfortable with the notion that the government has the right to decide who deserves to live. I don't mind them locking somebody up because that person is too dangerous to be free, but deciding that someone doesn't deserve to live is a good step beyond that.

I'm a relativist, though, like all of us (I am perhaps more willing to admit it than some) and I am not absolutely and in all cases opposed to executing criminals. Indeed, if I could see any significant advantage to be gained by it, an advantage which would outweigh the possibility of executing an innocent, I might support it. But where's the significant advantage? It doesn't save money, and there is no demonstrable deterrent value. The principal argument I see for it is that it feels so good to fry the bastards. Revenge may be sweet, but I'm not sure it's a business government should be in.
