9:47AM HWP leads Dow losers (HWP, IBM) by Tomi Kilgore
Hewlett-Packard (HWP) is losing $1.25, or 3.9 percent, to $31.13. The stock is currently the leading percentage decliner among components of the Dow Industrials ($INDU). The computer and printer giant said after Thursday’s closing bell that it was reducing earnings expectations for its fiscal first quarter to 35 cents to 40 cents per share, compared with current consensus analyst EPS estimates compiled by First Call of 42 cents. The company blamed economic conditions and an overall drop in consumer and technology spending. "December was like somebody turned the lights out," said Chief Executive Carly Fiorina. "We are preparing for toughening economic conditions ... we think caution is appropriate here." SG Cowen has followed by downgrading the stock to "buy" from "strong buy." Fellow PC maker and Dow member, IBM (IBM) is slipping 56 cents to $93.13.
