Life-with-possibility-of-parole has the capability to make restitution for
its mistakes. AND it is cheaper. It is also more moral, IMO.

The death penalty is not one of those compelling issues to me. I can see both sides and not get too exercised over either of them. I just recently (within the last year or so) concluded that I prefer not to have the death penalty. The main reason was your number two--it's cheaper. The cost of the executions we perform is enormous in terms of public upset, tying up the judicial system, the disgust of other nations, etc. Even without your other very valid reasons, the cost alone is enough to do it for me.

P.S. I tried this cost/benefit argument on X yesterday in the context of government grants to artists and it didn't move her a bit, but I think it applies here, too.
