I haven't been following this thread for a while, though I still hold SUNW, but yesterday I heard McNealy give the keynote at the iPlanet/Forte conference and one of his remarks answered a question I remember from this thread in the past, i.e., what does Java contribute to Sun's revenues.

The answer is that it *cost* Sun $150M a year to fund the work on the Java language.

Of course, that is not really the full story since I understood this to be only the language per se, not products based on or related to the language such as all the iPlanet stuff. It also doesn't reflect the contribution to the value of Sun presenting themselves as the source of what he calls webtone, i.e., complete hardware and software solutions which provide the essential services for dealing with the web in much the same way that a phone switch provides dialtone.
