May 1856: Rep. Preston S. Brooks, a State Rights Democrat from South Carolina, used a heavy cane in an attack on Sen. Charles
Sumner, R-Mass., in the Senate Chamber. Sumner was beaten unconscious and was not able to resume his Senate duties for more
than three years. Brooks resigned from his seat but was re-elected.
April 1850: During a debate on the Compromise of 1850, Sen. Henry S. Foote, a Unionist from Mississippi and supporter of the
compromise, drew a pistol on Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, D-Mo. and a compromise opponent. Other senators intervened before
Foote could fire.
