"Ban" WAR, folks!!! There's a petition I'll sign

That is a petition I too would sign. However, this may not seem as pie-in-the-sky as one might think. 26,000 people are killed or maimed evey year by landmines, the vast majority(90%+?) being non-military. My question to those who want to keep the status quo is why is this acceptable? These are people out for a walk, or simply trying to make a living who are probably on the lowest end of the economic ladder. They should not have their lives snuffed out because some jingoists want to defend a piece of their turf. If it wasn't so real it might be comical really.

As for it being ideologically half-hatched, I certainly hope that is not the case. I have more faith in mankind than to believe he would accept these devices knowing the pain they inflict. If every one of the holdout countries were forced to spend a month in a center in Cambodia where they take care of the amputees of landmines, my guess is that these ideological views would change in a second. At least in those who have some sense of conscientiousness.

Thank you for you post since I always do like to hear what the other side really thinks. BTW, my brother is a Major in the Army, and I am sure he thinks I am a total nut for embracing these views.

Regards,

Brian
