Will's Thursday commentary to exclude mention of the sensational and historic rape accusation by Arkansas businesswoman Juanita Broaddrick. In a scathing summary of the dark side of the Clinton legacy ignored by most media outlets, Will wrote: "It is reasonable to believe that [Clinton] was a rapist 15 years before becoming president, and that as president he launched cruise missiles against Afghanistan (a nearly empty terrorist camp), Sudan (a pharmaceutical factory) and Iraq to distract attention from problems arising from the glandular dimension of his general indiscipline." Two years ago Broaddrick accused Clinton of brutally raping her in a Little Rock hotel room when he was Arkansas attorney general. After reviewing her claim in December 1998, up to 40 previously undecided members of Congress voted to impeach Clinton, tipping the balance and making him the first elected president in American history to be indicted by the House. More than two thirds of Americans surveyed who saw Broaddrick detail her rape allegation during an NBC News interview found her believable. Acknowledging its deliberate attempt to suppress Will's Rapegate reference, the Times wrote in an editor's note buried at the bottom of its Friday editorial page: "George F. Will's column on Thursday's commentary page, as edited by the Times, omitted the author's statement that it is reasonable to believe that President Clinton 'was a rapist 15 years before becoming president.' Although some might dispute Will's interpretation of the facts, it is his opinion and should have been included in his column."
