FYI, cable modems are shared access. From each neighborhood point(your block for example)everyone is sharing the available bandwidth. So, it can be very fast if few people are using it and it can slow down considerably if they are not.

DSL is not shared bandwith and uses existing copper. Different speeds are available, though, this will probably disappear fairly quickly. Difference with DSL is that "downstream" and "upstream" bandwidth are very different with much greater "downstream" than "upstream".

DSL access can be used concurrently with phone usage on the same copper. At this point, DSL has worse reputation for reliabilty and ease of install/setup than cable.
