Very interesting articles. This Ashcroft appointment has me troubled for all the same reasons everyone else here is concerned. I'd like to be a bit of a Devil's Advocate here, though, and point to this part of the article:

candidate for vice president, frequently had spoken of the importance of his religious faith.


I think this is a legitimate question. I get very leery when any politician starts to blur the lines between church and State, quite frankly. And though I'm a Dem, happily voted for Lieberman, and as a Ct. resident have been happy with his service to my state, I was somewhat troubled by his regular references to the involvement of God in his decision-making.

As a country, we're far more used to seeing Christian fundamentalists blurring this line than Orthodox Jews, but I think the issue is the same.
