NTT is buying support for W-CDMA around the world, based on their huge income from the overpriced Japanese telecoms market.

This NTT worldwide W-CDMA investment programme could turn out to be one of the world's biggest financial misinvestments ever. Japan has had a few big glitches when their corporates went shopping overseas, flush with their profits from local and international sales.

My guess is that W-CDMA is going to take too long and AT&T will be buried by Sprint and others with seriously effective wireless Internet connections. The Europeans laugh at the USA for being backward in wireless. But the USA is likely to see the battle between cdma2000 and W-CDMA sooner than elsewhere. Japan's cdma2000 backing is relatively lightweight and not a good test of strength - Korea's is too CDMA-centric. The USA has lots of standards and marketing efforts and is a good place to see the war of the standards take place.

I'm looking forwards to it.
