Does america want a global directory? Take a look at how many hits are being done on SwitchBoard, Four11 Directory and others.

You have to remember, the directory stores more than just corporate info. The directory will be the way that small businesses can "advertise" their services on the web. I put that in quotes because it is not going to be traditional advertising. It is going to be a service keyword way of exposing providers.

People like Kinko's will expose their web available printers and services. You at home will decide to print some 1200x1200 color print and not have a printer at home which can provide the needed resolution. You will then "ask" the network to find a local place to print, and it will do so and let you know the price before you incur the charge. It will then let you know when you can pick up your print and where. This will be held on a global directory.

The most important thing about the directory will be that although it is global, that should not change the way you can use it. The end user will want an efficient directory, both in speed and feel. They will not wait for long time periods for the directory to respond with their info. Thus you must have a distributed, multi-tree directory which gives you access to multiple locations in the tree. This speeds up access, and gives that specific portion of the tree a local feel.

I think your question has already been answered, and the answer is "YES" the global corporate world wants a globabl directory. There are too many international companies, and international sales, for there not to be a global directory.

Obviously this is my opinion, and you can have yours also. If they don't want a global directory then we have finished the work in the DS arena and we can all go home. If one is needed, then we are only at the begining, and it will be an exciting future.
