I think many people at the fringes are working out their own mental health problems in a political arena. They are completely focused on themselves- as we all are, really, but since they represent the fringe in terms of mental health, they aren't a particularly salutary influence on the rest of us- jmo. Any cause will attract such people- I don't think it matters what cause (this is why I said Art protests might be a harmless diversion for them). Any people who really want to advance a cause would do well to limit the influence of the fringe. I think some causes do try to keep control over their more radical elements. Ghandi understood this, as did Martin Luther King.
