Meanwhile, we'll soon see whether the telecom service providers believe that 3G will be a lemon. Here comes another chance for them to bid in Europe.

<Telecommunications Minister Rik Daems will set the exact date for the country's auction of UMTS licences on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, a ministry spokeswoman said.

Four 20-year third generation mobile telephone licences are available, and the government hopes to raise 40-60 bln bfr from the sale, Daems said mid-December.

The spokeswoman said that candidates will "probably" have to file applications in February with the auction expected to begin in March, as set out in an indicative timetable published at the end of the government's 2000 session.
