All: Some information:

I contacted a planning representative in the Engineering Local LAN
design and implementation group at the company (one of the Big 3 auto
manufacturers) I work for. I specifically asked if my company was
considering Fibre Channel for any implementations in the near future. I
even specifically asked about CAD/CAM applications.

Here is the reply I received:

"We are not considering FC in any present or future designs in Engineering
at the desktop, riser traffic, or backbone (eg. traditional LAN infrastructure).
Nothing can compete with the $150-$250/port costs of Fast Ethernet technology.
We have started looking at FC "Arbitrated loop" standard for server peripherals
"SAN" (Storage Area Networks) for remote campus backups, disk mirroring etc...
SUN, HP, Seagate etc. are early adopters of this standard. Its too early for any
conclusions/direction in this area. This is not our primary focus, but several
Server groups approached us for advice."

The haunting keyword again is STORAGE.
FWIW...
