Ah, Spectacular Bid, perhaps the last truly great American thoroughbred. The game certainly peaked with the Bid. While I'm reminiscing, I remember one race I saw full of absolute giants. The 1967 Woodward. Won by Damascus over the brutally fast Dr. Fager, the immortal Buckpasser and Allen Jerkens' Handsome Boy. In the presence of greatness that day. Damascus, Fager and Buck were all Horse of the Year in successive years (first Buck, then Fager, then D).
