coug - for your Australia trip, TGA suggested, " . . . an acoustic coupler type of modem. There is one available for the palm. Search google for "palm and acoustic coupler modem". I have a VIIx which only works domestically, but my wife has a *pocketmail.com* acoustic modem for her IIIc. Hence, I couldn't use my VII in Canada, but her IIIc/modem works on virtually any phone, including cells, on the planet. The only hindrances are local line noise, if it's really severe, and slow transmission speeds (14.4 max sticks in my mind). The units are $99 at CompUSA, and the monthly subscription is a flat $9.95. I think pocketmail.com is still privately owned, BTW.
When I wrote to PALM about full North American access, I got a somewhat canned response that implied they may be waiting for 3G - but sooner rather than later. For a copy of that response, check out SI's PALM VII discussion circa mid-November 2000 under my name. Mang also posted a copy here about that same time, but the VII site has fewer posts to pcik through. 8-) Regards, Harry J. |
