I agree with others that PT probably refers to Partition Table. I doubt there's no partition table, but perhaps an incomplete, or compromised PT.
There's a few limitations on disk sizes. The most widely understood is the 1023 cylinder limit. DOS, and Windows resting on top of DOS, bumps into this limit as disk sizes grow. Another is the magic 8 gig limit, which I don't know much about.
If you install a disk with more than 1023 cylinders, your system will most likely still run, but cylinders beyond the limit are out of reach. Your description sounds like this may be happening.
In any case, the real solution is to re-partition your drive. Keep your sizes below 8 gig to be safe.
You have some choices about how to do this. Partition Magic does a nice job. It's visual, convenient, and won't cost you data loss. FDISK, a part of your OS, will do this for you too, but will wipe away your data.
I'd choose Partition Magic because few know exactly how they'll need their disk divided until they've had a chance to work with different configurations. With PM, changing your mind, and your sizes, is painless.
