That is a perfect description! My mother was a Yankee Matron who got transplanted from Conn to Va. --unwillingly, even forcefully, because you do what you have to do under the YM code-- and your description is EXACTLY she!
Except for the smoked fish thing. Ewww.
The plain talk characteristic really messed her up in the South. It was as if they spoke an entirely foreign language that she had to learn, and she did, but it was always a second language- you could sometimes feel her pausing and translating something. She was never totally at ease with the way expressions were used that had totally opposite meanings, subtexts, the complete avoidance of "nasty" feelings. I think political parties do the same thing, though--- use words and terms that translate differently depending on your audience.
So now I feel as if I know you, Yankee woman.
