I have just been collecting some information to send to a friend who referred to me as an alpha:


Troops of baboons have strict hierarchies and although females do mate with lower ranking males, she will seek
out the top-ranking males when at her most fertile. The top-ranking male mates with as many desirable and high-ranking females as possible, but he soon becomes exhausted and loses condition. For this reason, there is often a high turnover of alpha males.
