Saw that Fusion article... REALLY COOL!! And keeping my fingers crossed. But one thing I still don't understand is how they will effectively maintain a fusion reaction or how they will then convert that tremendous heat to steam (can you imagine the steam turbines they will require?!!)

As for windmills, how come the enviromentalists aren't all up in arms over the threat they pose to birds of prey and other endangered predatory birds in California?

And how many of them will you need to produce 1 megawatt-hour of usable power? What is the effective service life of a windmill before it has to be torn down and replaced?

Nahh... Nuclear is still the cheapest alternative:

nei.org

"Amount of electricity generated by a 1,000 MWe reactor at 80% capacity factor in one year: 7 billion KWh - enough to supply electricity for 650,000 households. If generated by other fuel sources, it would require:

Oil - 11.9 million barrels 1 barrel yields 584 KWh
Coal - 3.3 million short tons 1 ton yields 2,070 KWh
Nat. Gas - 72 billion cubic feet 100 cubic feet yields 9.62 KWh"

And compared to a normal windmill farm as your link indicated. In one example at Lakota Ridge:

15 of these 750 Kilowatt turbines producing 30 million kilowatt-hours over the course of the year.

This is where Clinton/Gore have really screwed up. They wanted to progress to alternative fuels without building the required infrastructure necessary make them cost-effective against fossil fuels.

Ron
