I think this topic could be categorized on the basis of the target markets
further subsegmented by the type of flash memory that is produced.

SanDisk is primarily a flash card manufacturer who is targeting consumer electronics.

As far as SanDisk is concerned, the company is vertically integrated.
The list linked here should be read from the bottom up.

The foundation is flash memory design including licensure of core patents to competitors.
The middle of the diagram includes product manufacture, assembly and testing. The upper
end of the diagram includes e-tail and retail marketing and sales, as well as brand development.

SanDisk has everything from soups to nuts. That is "how they do their stuff." This speaks
primarily to the design and manufacture of SanDisk's main flash card form factors, Compact Flash,
MultiMediaCard and the Secure Digital Card. To my knowledge, all the flash memory SanDisk
manufactures or procures is consumed by their own product line aimed primarily at the consumer
electronics and telecommunications infrastructure markets.
