Jan. 14--POCKET IPAQ PROVES SWEET; START-UP SOURS EXPERIENCE: Sadly, this beautifully designed piece of computer magic failed the key test when I did this evaluation. It required the help of top experts at Microsoft Corp. giving me customized technical support before I was able to get it to synchronize with my desktop computer, which, ironically enough, is a Compaq Presario. So, if you decide to take a chance and try this, make sure you have an iron-clad guarantee that you can return it.
When I finally got the thing to work, it was just about the sweetest little high-tech toy I ever had the privilege to test. Above all, this Pocket PC stands out from the pack for the sheer brilliance and readability of its color display screen. Unlike others, including competing color screens on the Palm IIIc and Hewlett-Packard Jornada, you can stand in broad daylight and still clearly read the Compaq's display.
With the latest surveys showing that these Microsoft-enabled Pocket PCs now enjoy a greatly improved 16 percent handheld computer market share, the Compaq would be the one to have if it works for you.
A huge plus is Compaq's docking design that permits users to easily plug in such peripherals as speech recognizers, cameras, cellular modems and GPS radio receivers. Like all Pocket PCs, the iPaq plays MP3 music files, displays JPEG photographs, runs MPEG movies and offers Pocket Excel and Pocket Word to facilitate moving work files back and forth with a desktop PC.
With all this going for it, it's a shame that the iPaq failed to perform the most basic of all possible handheld computing tests--talking to a desktop. |
