'Mighty ' bailed out My ASTON KUSEKA
MOPANI Copper Mines (MCM) management has earmarked $100,000 for the operations of demoted 'mighty' Mufulira Wanderers to ensure the legendary soccer team returns to the Premier league next year. Mopani Copper Mines chief executive officer Tom Dale made the assurance in an exclusive interview in Mufulira at the weekend. Dale who was briefing the Press on the firm's successes in the last eight months of existence and the future plans, said his firm had earmarked $100,000 for the club's operations this year. He said his company's wish, like that of many Mufulira residents and supporters, was to see to it 'mighty' reclaimed its lost glory to return to top flight soccer next season. Dale said his firm would not be daunted by the once glamorous side's historic demotion to Division One and do everything to revert the club to where it belongs. 'As management, we want to ensure that the club keeps going in its bid to return to the Premier league where it belongs that is the feeling of the community in Mufulira as well as Mopani management,' said Dale said. He said though Mopani was not obliged to sponsor 'mighty' the firm only saw it fit to do so to avoid letting down the community which the firm regards as serious stakeholders. Dale said when it took over the running of the Mufulira Mine, Mopani management realised that there was a sentimental attachment to Wanderers by the community. 'That is why though we are not obliged to sponsor the team which exists as a company, we feel we have a moral obligation to support it for the sake of the community in Mufulira.' On management aspect of the team, Dale said Mopani management was ready to assist Wanderers in that area once approached. 'Though we are not the direct sponsors of the club, if they are in need of assistance related to management, we are ready to assist them once they approach us. 'We do not want to seem to be interfering in the operations,' he said.
