Nortel Networks Building Wireless Internet Momentum

Records Largest Share Gain, Says Merrill Lynch 'Scorecard'

Nortel Networks continues to build momentum in the global Wireless Internet
infrastructure arena, winning more market share than any of its competitors
over nearly three years, according to Merrill Lynch's January 2001 report on
"Wireless Equipment: The Wireless Scorecards."

The report credits Nortel Networks with a 20 percent share of the global
market as of November 30, 2000, an increase of seven percent since Merrill
Lynch began its tracking and analysis of wireless equipment contracts in
March of 1998.

Of the major wireless equipment vendors, only Ericsson has a larger share,
and only Nortel Networks and Ericsson have gained share over the same,
33-month period.

Merrill Lynch bases its market share estimates on a rolling, 18-month
comparison of the value of all wireless equipment contracts announced.

Nortel Networks is the global CDMA market leader with a 45 percent share
over the most recent, 18-month period, according to Merrill Lynch. In North
America, Merrill Lynch shows Nortel Networks as the overall wireless
equipment market leader with a 30 percent share for the same period.

In the fourth quarter of 2000 alone, Nortel Networks announced major 3G
UMTS awards from AT&T Wireless (United States), Xfera (Spain) and
T-Mobile (Germany), collectively estimated to be worth more than US$1.25
billion. For the year, Nortel Networks announced an estimated US$2.1 billion
in wireless awards.

Instrumental in Nortel Networks wireless momentum is the company's
'Wings of Light' strategy, which unifies wireless, optical and IP (Internet
Protocol) capabilities to redefine how wireless services will be delivered and
managed for the next generation.

Herschel Shosteck Associates ranks Nortel Networks #1 in Wireless
Internet infrastructure strategy. The Yankee Group has also recognized
Nortel Networks as #1 for its next generation Wireless Internet architecture
strategy.
