Well for beginners I tell them to learn how to trade mutual
funds ( no loads ) before they try to out smart the market
and pick stocks. Better than Funds are the indexes
such as QQQ..in fact I trade it a lot more than I do stocks.

The SPY or DIA might be better for a beginner.

The QQQ has more action but can set a person
back more if they slip up also they need to be
set up with a margin account so they can short it.

It shorts without needing an up tick.

avg volume X price. And posted it on that thread.
