I agree with your suggestion of a laptop. For people that really need their computers, though, laptops should have a big warning label on them. You drop them and you're hosed. The way I've handled this is to get a USB CD writer and habitually put all my important stuff in a SINGLE rooted folder (XXXXXXX's). That way all the subfiles and trees get copied with a single drag and drop.
