This is probably because there is nothing numinous about political beliefs, or mysterious about their origins and possible purposes.
Life, the fact of "being", however, is numinous and mysterious, despite reductionist explanations to the contrary. Most people probably realize that in thinking and speaking about it, its possible source and origins, they are speaking of something beyond themselves, beyond their own power and understanding. Organized religion has "collected" all that mystery and power unto itself, rightly or wrongly. Politics could never serve to inspire the same sense of awe, hence, never the same sense of "sacrilege". |
