The Left Lies to hurt Ashcroft

Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001
Hypocritical Democratic senators are running plays out of the Left's classic
personal destruction playbook to derail the nomination of their former
colleague, John Ashcroft, R- Mo., for attorney general.
Senators John Kerry, D-Mass., and Joe Biden, D-Del., were making the media
rounds over the weekend for the express purpose of bashing John Ashcroft,
all the while knowing they were spinning falsehoods to assassinate his
character.

For they know full well that legislators, by virtue of their constitutional
responsibility, advocate positions they favor enacting into law.

That is what legislators are expressly supposed to do.

Why, then, would Kerry and Biden castigate Ashcroft for fulfilling his duty
as a duly elected senator from Missouri?

Because they are hoping to curry favor with the most extreme leftists in the
Democratic Party.

They are not men of honor, though they are treated as such by the likes of
Tim Russert of NBC and Larry King of CNN and Don Imus of Infinity Radio and
MSNBC.

No, they represent the lowest of the low.

Merely because, as a senator, John Ashcroft supported certain legislation or
advocated particular positions as part of his rightful duties does not in
any way indicate that he would do anything less than enforce all existing
laws.

The roles of legislators and executives are very different, purposely so.

That is why it is wrong to gauge a potential executive branch appointee
based on that person's specific legislative activity, other than issues of
personal integrity and the like.

The record of John Ashcroft as Missouri attorney general and governor -
executive branch positions both - demonstrates this beyond a doubt.

As a U.S. senator his tenure has been marked as one of tolerance, respect
and dignity for all people.

What he is not, however, is a hypocrite, which is why he opposed the
nomination by Bill Clinton of Ronnie White to the federal judiciary, despite
the fact that he happened to be black.

After all, is that not what we as a society would hope for? That people, as
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so eloquently hoped, would be judged by the
content of their character and not by the color of their skin?

John Ashcroft had serious reservations about the qualifications of this
judicial nominee, who would have received a life term as a federal judge.

In more than 90 percent of nominations of blacks by Clinton, Ashcroft
supported and voted for the black nominees. Sounds like strong support for
blacks ascending to high federal office, when they - like any nominee - are
qualified.

It's the last part that has apparently escaped Sens. Kerry and Biden and
their friends on the Left in their determined effort to derail this
nomination at any cost - including their own self-respect and dignity, if
any exists.

Which is why we can infer from their reprehensible conduct that this fact
has not escaped them, which makes it even worse - though hardly unexpected,
because this is political to them.

As it always is to the Left.

It is never about right and wrong.

It is never about honor and dignity.

It is always about winning.

For the Left it is always about power; getting it when they don't have it
and keeping it when they do.

Understanding this is the first step necessary to dealing with them and
their comrades more effectively, because they don't play by the rules.

The old observation that Democrats always fear that the truth will be
exposed, while Republicans fear that it will not, is appropriate here.

Pass the word, truth is on our side.
