It seems terrible to me that people think the virtual world is real

Hi, X. I thought about responding to this when you brought it up yesterday and have been reflecting on it since. Poet's bombshell has prompted me to speak up.

I guess I'm one of those people who thinks what we're doing here is real. Every time I go to click on the submit button I am acutely aware that whatever I post is part of an indelible public record in which I don't want to make a total fool of myself. Not that anyone would ever care to research me. I'm not a public figure and don't ever want to be. But they could if they wanted to and who I am is out there for all to see.

Many, many years ago my mother expressed concern about something I was doing. She didn't seem to personally disapprove but was concerned for my reputation. I finally disabused her of her concern by explaining that I no longer lived in a small town, which meant that, if worse came to worse, I could change jobs, move a few miles away, and totally reinvent myself. That's the anonymity of the city. Well, on SI I'm back in a small town environment. I find that pretty real.
