Alcatel Enhances Mobility at Sells Printing Company With the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 and Wireless Reflexes

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 2001--
Web-Press Printer for Fortune 500 Companies Deploys Alcatel
OmniPCX 4400 IP-Based Voice Communication System
Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) announced today that Sells Printing Company, a business-to-business, business-to-consumer catalog commercial Web-press printer, has selected the award-winning Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 IP-based communication platform to provide mobility to employees using the system's Alcatel Wireless Reflexes, a range of Private Wireless Telecommunication (PWT) handsets.
Sells was in need of a voice communication system that could meet user demands for increased mobility and sophisticated voice features such as voice over IP, as well as satisfy network manager requirements for lower operational costs and ease of administration.
With hundreds of print jobs every month, customer service representatives need to communicate not only with customers, but with fellow employees at Sells, including outside sales representatives, press workers and purchase order clerks.
Sells thus equipped nearly all of their employees requiring a phone with the Alcatel Wireless Reflexes as their only telephone terminal in Sells' 100,000-square-foot printing facility.
These Wireless Reflexes allow users at Sells to take calls anywhere in the main building or the warehouse and share the same advanced PBX features as co-workers using Alcatel Desktop IP phones, features such as dial-by-name, voice mail notification and access, as well as conference calling.
In addition to looking for a wireless solution for the telephone users at Sells, Jason Cetina, Sells' network telecommunications administrator, also wanted a voice system that can migrate to IP.
"When I had to purchase a new PBX for Sells to replace our aging PBX, I did not want a pure-IP solution because analog connections are still crucial," said Cetina. "The solution of choice was Alcatel's OmniPCX 4400, a full-fledged PBX that can handle IP connections as well as wireless, analog and digital connections. Alcatel is also the only vendor who could offer 99.999% reliability on its OmniPCX 4400 voice system."
"Our initial goal when we put the system in place was to start by duplicating the core functionality we had under our old system. We wanted this change to be as seamless and transparent as possible," said Craig Beedy, vice president of technology at Sells. "The ability to retain our existing voice mail application with the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 with complete transparency was very attractive to us especially in terms of investment protection. As for the users, they get to enjoy the mobility provided by the Alcatel Wireless Reflexes. It is a great solution all around."
"Sells Printing is known to be a visionary in the printing industry using technology to achieve an enormous competitive advantage," Tom Wilburn, Alcatel senior vice-president, North America Enterprise Business. "With the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400, Sells could migrate to a next-generation voice system while at the same time protecting network investment and reducing total cost of ownership."
