Another open question - databases.

I've been using a peer to peer application lately (Groove). I'm very impressed with it. It's changed my thinking about what the internet will be. I am imagining that the network actually is the computer. That the net will be a truely worldwide desktop, complete with databases that dwarf current databases.

Can anyone comment on the implications of this? In other words Oracle is the leading database manufacturer. Is this because it efficiently accesses data? Is the speed of access to data on huge databases a software consideration? If it is then who would be in a position to benefit?

Just some idle speculation.
