It is not clear to me at this point,if GPRS can make use of Discontinuous Reception (DTX)
It can be done through PPCH, Packet Paging Channel . By paging the MS before the packet data transfer, you can have Discontinuous Reception. However that PPCH is not always allocated, which would be indicated by the BCCH.
On the other hand, if packet data traffic channels is used for the uplink, MS must monitor the downlink timeslots continuously for the PACCH, Packet Associated Control Channel.
Another problem is that MS need time to perform adjacent cell signal level measurement, and that can only be done when the MS is not doing any transmission/reception. So if you have more timeslots assigned to you, then you can't do that measurement in those time slots, which means you have less time to do the measurement therefore the possible degraded performance.
GPRS is not doing anything new to actually improve the spectrum efficiency significantly. It is not improving the capacity. It is a little better than HSCSD, but I doubt it can do much better. |
