Jim, interesting observation on the Japanese seamen...the rigidities you mention are likely a major contributing factor to the ongoing economic malaise of Japan. interestingly, the same cultural qualities that are now often condemned were hailed as superior while the bubble economy was still intact. for a time the Japanese model was held as something that should be emulated everywhere if one were to hope to approach anything on par with Japan's economic success.
