Sorry, but the left can't claim Thoreau. He was America's first right wing beatnik. Consider the opening lines to On the Duty of Civil Disobedience - I heartily accept the motto,--"That government is best which governs least"; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe,--"That government is best which governs not at all"

Do lefties really go along with this? I thought not. Maybe we can share Emerson. Brownson was a staunch Catholic, his attacks on Protestants were very effective. I have been under the impression his periodical, The Quarterly Review, was quite conservative.
