JDS may sell unit to Nortel

--10:02 pm - By Allen Wan

Fiber-optics components maker JDS Uniphase is in talks to sell a Swiss factory to Nortel Networks for about $3 billion to gain antitrust approval for its purchase of rival SDL, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday. While the two firms have outlined an agreement, other issues are unresolved, Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the negotiations. Neither company was immediately available for comment on the report. JDS is selling the Zurich plant -- which makes 980 nanometer pump lasers used to amplify signals in fiber networks -- to satisfy U.S. regulators who wish to preserve competition in the market for telecom lasers, the report said. Nortel wants the factory to strengthen a components unit in which it plans to sell shares.
